ONCE THERE WAS A PROJECT
[/font][/center]Twenty three years ago, the science world showed enough knowledge of how DNA molecules divided and functioned and even how their four simple base pairs helped code for the unique genetic make up of an individual. And while there were some in the scientific community who wanted to do further studies on how such knowledge could benefit humans, the few government controls in place effectively stopped all hope of such research in the United States. However a shadowy group of individuals felt that such things were foolish and quietly and covertly recruited a collection of scientists to work with gathered DNA samples and find a way to create two genetic strands - one male, one female - that were not disposed to certain flaws. Thinking that such a project could save lives and effectively cure many known disorders, the group of scientists threw themselves into their work, eventually producing two viable DNA strands and eventually something even better...
ONCE THERE WERE TWENTY FOUR SUBJECTS
[/font][/center]Two and a half years into what became known as Project Crescent, the team managed to use the DNA strands they had cultivated and spliced together to finally produce living and viable children. And given that one subject of each gender would not be enough for testing how well they had done, twelve baby girls and twelve baby boys were created. For months the cell masses that would become these children didn't look or develop any differently than those of a normal child created through IFV treatments. In fact once the children were of age to be "born" the only differences they had to normal children were their exceptional health and apparently better senses. In fact they were so similar they had to be marked with a small tattoo...
ONCE THERE WAS A REVELATION
[/font][/center]Unfortunately for the scientists, what they thought was a well meaning research project had darker motives - motives they felt could never be allowed to be realized. So in the space of a few days disks were erased and quietly destroyed, electronic work was "accidentally" lost, papers shredded or taken home and burned and preparations were made to destroy the lab itself. However on the last day the scientists found they could not destroy the biggest evidence of the project - the twenty four innocent infants. Instead the infants were sent to different adoption agencies in the hope that they would grow up separated enough so that they would never meet. Once the lab was destroyed and the subjects scattered, the scientists hoped that their efforts at superior genetic engineering had failed and that with everything gone, that would be the end of it...
ONCE THERE WAS A TRAITOR
[/font][/center]However that wasn't the end of it. One of the scientists wasn't happy to see two and a half years of hard work be wasted. Once she realized just how her colleagues had acted, she spent a year tracking down the man who recruited her for the project and let it slip that the subjects might not be as dead as previously reported. Of course with no way to track down the missing subjects and a great deal of information lost, there was no choice but to restart the project. Only this time there would be no mistakes. The new group would have tighter security around them and more direct oversight. With slight improvements in technology, the process to make a new series of genetically engineered beings was faster and able to use a wider variety of genetic material. And though the newer subjects were inherently superior, there were also some interesting results...
SOON THERE WILL BE A CONFRONTATION
[/font][/center]Twenty One years have passed since the day the lab of Project Crescent was destroyed. In that time the twenty four subjects lived, developed and grew up completely unaware of their origins. Some felt lucky, others thanked God or the absent "parents" they never found, but all found themselves excelling in one way or another. Unfortunately this led to events contrary to what the scientists of Crescent wished for them - close proximity. By some stroke of serendipity all twenty four subjects have found their way to Southern California, even if they have spent that time unaware of the dopplegangers walking around. Unfortunately this peaceful ignorance cannot last forever. Especially since out of the thousands of teens arriving as college freshman for the 2019-2020 school year, several are not all they appear to be. Instead of being moved in by parents and sibling and sent off with requests to call home, stay out of trouble and keep grades up, these teens are being warned to not give people cause to question their origins too deeply and are being requested to assimilate quickly. And above all, they are reminded not to lose sight of their current mission - recovery...
